The Scariest Thing I’ve Ever Done

November 13th, 2006 by gracel250 in Recent English Weblogs · No Comments

Throughout my life..I’ve always been cautious of everything I do and was always paranoid of everything that I face in my life.

When I was informed that all of year 6 would be going to the “Great Aussie Bush Camp” I already assumed that it was just going to be a boring-ish camp and it would be alright, but I would be a bit bored; even though all my friends could come along. Yet I did not know, we were going to do some activities which involved one of my biggest fears: heights.

Soon, teachers started to arrange groups for the group activities, handed out notes on information about the Campsite, what activities we were going to do, the luggage we needed to bring and all the safety notes (safety notes, etc.) My friends were beginning to get excited, as we had only been on one camp in our primary school lives, and this would be the second and last time we would all go to camp together.

The day arrived, and the whole grade was fairl anxious as we boarded the coach and waved goodbye to our family, as we would see them in a couple of days time. After a few hours drive, we arrived. By then, our grade was already restless, and tired already; so were the teachers.

We were told the instructions and were introduced to our instructors and my instructor was called Craig, also known as “Big Bear”. As I put down my luggage, I was prepared to go on our first activity, raft building. Everybody got their P.F.D lifejackets and were eager to began “raft building”. The materials for  building our raft included: planks of wood, four inner tubes and several, strong ropes. When all the groups finished constructing their rafts, we started racing other groups. Although ours came apart in the middle of it and we lost, I still had lots of fine.

Then, the unexpected happened. Our next activity was the “Giant Swing”. As soon as I heard that name, I was nervous. It was a 14-15m high swing, and once u’re pulled to the top, you just pull the trigger and you’re sent flying really fast! It is very similiar to a normal swing, except 14m higher! The suspense for everyone was excitement, but for me, it was just nerves. When my peers were gradually rising on the swing, I was extremely nervous, as the higher they got, I knew that that would be how high I would have to go. Although it was NOT compulsory to go all the way to the top, or go on the swing at all, I eventually decided to go all the way to the top, as I knew that this activity might only be a once-in-a-lifetime adventure! When I was being pulled up, I tried really hard to not look down, but I just couldn’t help it. I looked down and saw all my peers cheering me on, as well as the teacher that was supervising us and my instructor. As I arrived at the top, I thought, this is it. My group counted down, (3-2-1) and I pulled the trigger. It was one of the best things that ever happened to me! It was so fun and was something I won’t regret for the rest of my life.

The rest of the camp was just as fun, as we did activities such as : rock climbing, games and trivias at night and morning, canoeing, flying-fox, a disco and more. My teacher (Mr Mac) also tricked the whole grade on April Fools’ Day and it was so hilarious!

To me, it was such a shock that in year 7, I was lucky enough to attend and have a great time with my friends, the Great Aussie Bush Camp! Most of the activities were similiar, but we did some more challenging activities. Once again, I had a wonderful time, even though the food was really disgusting! At least it made me realise how much I appreciate the amazing food and facilities I have at home!

So far, the “Giant Swing” would be the scariest thing I’ve ever done. Who knows, maybe when I look back at this camp one day, it will be probably be nothing, but for now, I’m proud of the achievement I’ve made! I’m glad I made this decision and have never looked back.

TV Show Review: How I Met Your Mother

September 28th, 2006 by gracel250 in Recent English Weblogs · No Comments

Currently on TV right now, every single Thursday night on Channel 7 at 7:30pm, How I met Your Mother does their weekly episode to entertain viewers like me, once again.

The TV Show is about Ted, the main character who is in the year 2030 and explains to his teenage children about how he met their mother. At the beginning of every episode every week, there is an introduction which leads back to a flashback of the year 2005, where he met their mother.

When Ted’s best friends Marshall and Lily decide to get marry, Ted starts thinking about what he wants in his future - a girlfriend who would become his wife and eventually have children together.

Every week, a new adventure happens as Ted’s other so-called “best friend” Barney attempts to get Ted a girlfriend. Along with the gang (Marshall and Lily) they try to set Ted up with a girlfriend. Barney, the most out going friend does many outrageous things to hook up Ted with a random girl.

On the first few episodes of How I Met Your Mother Ted meets a Metro News News Reporter called Robyn. When Barney does his usual “Have you met Ted?” game to ladies (to pair up with Ted), he does it to Robyn when Ted seen Robyn from a distance apart and falls in love with her. They fall in love with each other at the end of the night, but Ted ruins it by saying “I think I love you”. Eventually, they break up, but Robyn becomes great friends with the gang.

From then onwards, Ted still have feelings for Robyn. Although she still have some feelings, they decide to remain just as good friends.

The storyline continues with humorous dialogue and the search for a girlfriend for Ted continues. Over the holiday seasons they meet new people as they always go somewhere new, but Ted never finds the right girlfriend.

Right now, the first season of this successful television show has not been completed and will continue to amuse many viewers. It has also won 2 emmy awards, which makes this TV show even more popular.

Overall, I would rate this TV show 4 stars out of 5 because of its hilarious dialogue and funny characters, as well as its settings and non-stop effort to bring a fantastic episode each week. I would recommend this show to people who would enjoy comedy, are on a desperate road to find love or would like to be entertained by a great storyline on an excellent comedy show.

September 11th 2001: An Unforgettable Tragedy

September 16th, 2006 by gracel250 in · 1 Comment

Recently, September 11th (also known as 9/11) had its 5th anniversary and is one of the most tragic days in world wide history.

5 years ago, on Tuesday September 11th, in the early daylights of the day at approximately 7:58am, the United Airlines Flight 175 departed from Los Angeles. It carried 56 passengers, 2 pilots along with 7 flight attendants. Then the Boeing 767 was hijacked after its take-off and was diverted to New York. At 7:59am, the American Airline Flight 11 departed from Boston to fly to Los Angeles. This plane carried 81 passengers, 2 pilots along with 9 flight attendants. Again, this plane was hijacked after its take-off and was then diverted to New York as well. The United Airlines Flight 93 aeroplane which was a Boeing 757 left at 8:01am and carried 38 passengers, 2 pilots and 5 flight attendants. It left Newark, N.J for San Francisco. Then, at 8:10am, the American Airlines Flight 77, departed Dulles International (Washington’s) airport to Los Angeles. This aeroplane carried 58 passengers, 2 pilots and 4 flight attendants. Once it took - off, it was hijacked.

At 8:46am, our world changed. The American Flight 11 from Boston crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Afterwards, at 9:03am, the United Flight 175 from Boston crashed into the South Tower of the World Trade Center. When this happened, the U.S. Federal Aviation shut down all airports in New York. Bridges and Tunnels which lead to New York City were closed at 9:21am. All domestic flights were grounded by the U.S. Federal Aviation Adminstration at 9:25am.

At approximately 9:45am, American Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon. Then, the South Tower collapsed at 10:05am at the World Trade Center. At the exact same time, the White House is evacuated. A large side of the Pentagon collapsed at 10:10am, while United Flight 93 had crashed into a wooded area of Pennsylvania after some passengers had confronted the hijacker.  During 10:28am, the North Tower at the World Trade Center collapsed as well.

This tragic event the world we live in greatly. Approximately 2973 innocent people were killed and their loved ones had to suffer just because a couple of people had hijacked planes, then crashed them into some of the most famous buildings in America: The World Trade Center and Pentagon. Those people will never come back and will always be missed greatly, but it doesn’t seem fair that average day American Citizens were killed for doing nothing wrong - but because people weren’t smart enough to think of the consquences. They were selfish just to think of themselves and not about others. Many people had their lives changed in just one day. The world will always remember this day and the lost loved ones, but we can never forgive those irresonsible hijackers. What were they thinking?

After this event, I learnt that you should always be aware of your surroundings and society, be alert at all times, don’t take everything for granted, because one day you might have great friends, and the next, you might never see them again. I have also learnt how cruel and inconsiderate people can be. Mistakes can be made, but that can’t always be forgotten and forgiven. I give all my sympathy to the relatives and friends of their lost loved ones and hope they will move on from that day, because everyday is a new day, and hopefully those days will mainly be good days. I would also like to congraulate and also admire the firefighters, police, ambulances, doctors, nurses, etc. for their hard work and dedication. They spent many hours finding survivors and taking good care of the survivors.

The World Trade Center, North Tower and South Tower and also the Pentagon will always be remembered. Although they are left there empty from September 11 2001, tourists will be informed on this unforgettable tragedy. It will always be remembered and never forgotten of. Who knows if they will be rebuilt again? Is this tragedy to much for new buildings? Maybe, but this day will never be forgotten in the history of our world. Everytime people pass this disaster, they will be reminded of this catastrophe. Even if the World Trade Centre and Pentagon is built again, how long will that take? At least 5-10 years!

Peace and love to all those killed in this disaster!

Jordan Sonnenblick: Drums, Girls and Dangerous Pie

August 21st, 2006 by gracel250 in · 3 Comments

Jordan Sonnenblick wrote one of my favourtie books: Drums, Girls and Dangerous Pie. It is about a 13 year old boy called Steven. He has an ordinary life with a loving family and friends. Steven is a gifted junior high school drummer for his band “All Star Jazz Band” with a wild imagination, has a huge crush on the hottest girl in school - Renee Albert and is constantly being annoyed by his young brother. On an unexpected day, after his young brother Jeffrey was rushed to hospital, he finds out the devastating truth. Jefferey suffered from leukemia. In this book, it tells the reader how Steven has to handle this drastic turn in his life. He has to deal with Jeffrey’s illness as well as his parents trying to keep their family together in one piece.

Everytime Steven goes to the hospital to visit his 5 year old brother, he meets a teenage girl who happens to teach Steven a whole new level in friendship; that was before she suffered a disease and passed away.

This book is extremely touching and readers will be enchanced by the journey Steven and his family are enduring.

List of why I like this author’s style of writing:

* He enchances readers with the emotional storyline

* He shows how teenage life can go from perfect to unbearable

* The author shows the reader how some children have to bear with these situations in their everyday lives

* The character has the normal teenage life - the main character isn’t popular but has great friends who support him/her through everything and has a major crush on the hottest girl in the grade.

*Although brothers and sisters are annoying at times, you are always thankful that they were you brother or sister, especially if a tragedy occurs and you need them the most.

* This book shows you how to appreciate life and be thankful for your family and friends everyday!

* Life and illnesses could change your life in a matter of minutes.

* Life could be the best thing that ever happened to you - or the worst.

* Never give up hope or faith on anything at all

* Expect the Unexpected

Review of Senior Dance/Drama Matinee & Art Exhibition

August 7th, 2006 by gracel250 in · No Comments

On the 26th of July, Wednesday, during periods 3 and 4; year 7, 8 and 9 watched an entertaining concert by the Senior Dance and Drama groups.  As recess ended, the 3 grades entered the hall. It was decorated with many artworks and pottery by students in the school.

When year 7, 8 and 9 settled down, the concert began. It commmenced with a drama production with 3 year 11 girls called “Bats makes me Crazy”. For this drama production, I thought it was a bit boring and I didn’t understand what that performance was about.

Next, 2 girls danced. Throughtout the whole performance, there were short dances after each Drama performance. In my opinion, those dances were annoying, as we kept seeing them one after every Drama performance.

Afterwards, the drama group did another performance, which was about a group of friends who were confessing their love for each other, when they were held a soccer ball when they were confessing. This performance was hiliarious and I enjoyed it a lot.

2 different performances by year 12 girls were performed after. One of them was a cleaner (maid) in a hotel who was daydreaming as she was cleaning. The other girl was a cowgirl who talked about her dream with cows and her trip at the farm.

The performances continued, and some of it was boring, but there was a good performance after awhile. Girls from various grades did a tap dance with gold hats. I thought it was quite entertaining.

As the concert concluded, students were allowed to browse through the artworks which were on display. They had a high standard and should be congratulated.

While I was browsing through the artworks, I recognised one of the artworks I did last year! There were also artworks by my classmates and friends. It felt great that my work was presented to the school, on display.

Over all, I thought the Senior Dance and Drama Matinee was fantastic, but some of the performances could of been better. The art exhibition was fantastic, and I hope to see more artworks by other students from our school soon. It would also be great to see more performances by fellow students in the school again.

International Day =)

July 22nd, 2006 by gracel250 in · No Comments

On Wednesday, 19th July 2006, Carlingford High held its International Day. For the first 2 periods, we attended normal lessons; unless you had to go help with set up or rehearse for your performance (which was held after recess in the hall). Year 7 and 8 had scripture during the first 2 periods.

After recess all students gathered together at the quad for a quick assembly. When assembly was over, everybody followed instructions and walked into the hall for the concert.

In my opinion, the concert was entertaining and funny. It was hosted by Sarachina Trikha and Amelia Dominy. The performances include: Fashion show with students dressed up in costumes of their countries, Indian Fashion Show with 3 teachers and students, the piano being played and sung in Korean, a Korean Flute being played, a Chinese Opera, Cheerleaders doing a few routines, a few songs in Chinese (one of the songs were from Jay Chow), the Jazz Ensemble sung, a student from Roselea Public school did a special Indian Dance, Year 11 girls in the drama group did a play, German Slap Dance by 4 Year 12 boys and many more.

As the concert ended, it was raining outside, but that didn’t stop Carlingford High’s International Day. All around the school, many stores were held in all the blocks. Food, drinks and activities were held throughout the day.

In A Block, there were the French Stores which sold lollies and heart balloons. They also held a Soccer game in which you had to throw the ball into the hole. Acroos from the French Store was the Japanese Store which sold delicious Green Tea Ice-cream, pancakes and contained some games to play. In A2, students could go inside and pay some money and have a Karoke Competition.

The Italy store in B Block had spaghetti, lasgna and garlic bread whcich ran out quickly! Opposite it was the German store which had foods such as Blackforest Cake, gelatos (with colours!) and sausages. Many people lined up to buy food from both of these stores and teachers had to re-stock them rapidly.

China held their store outside E Block and it sold many things. These included: sticky rice, chicken skewers, wontons, dumplings, soups and Chrysanthemum drinks. In E Block there was also a band which attracted a lot of students to watch them perform.

On the Quad, there was the Irish store which sold scones with butter and jam as well as cookies. Next to it was a game which required accurate and strong throwing skills. You had to knock cans down with a ball. Near D Block, a wrestling and sock pulling game was in action. Boys had to grab each others loose socks off except they could not fall down. Luckily, mats from the canteen were on the hard and wet concrete. Another game was when the boys had to hop on one leg and hold the other while trying to balance on the mats (in the required area) and knock down other boys or bump into them until they were out of the required areas.

Inside the canteen, the USA store held a game which you had to throw darts and pop balloons. If you popped the right ones, a small amount of gift voucher was awarded. The canteen was also open, except it only sold some hot foods, snacks and drinks. On the other side of the canteen, a basketball competition was taking place and it was popular with boys.

Overall, the International Day was a success. All students had a great day participating in the games and activities, trying different foods from other cultures and watching performances in the hall. It would be fun to have another International Day where we celebrate diversity and experience other cultures.

Bend It Like Beckham: Film Review =)

June 17th, 2006 by gracel250 in Recent English Weblogs · 1 Comment

The latest film I saw on TV was “Bend It Like Beckham”.  It was a great film with some suspense and hilarious moments.
Jess is an average teenage girl with a loving and protective family. They are Indian and have a culture that you could not marry white men and you would probably had an arranged marriage. In the movie, Jess bends these rules and gets into a lot of trouble but adventure at the same time.
She has a talent and interest in soccer. She wants to be just as good as her idol, but she knows that no one can bend it like Beckham.
Jess usually plays in the parks with male friends, but nobody realizes that she is talented enough to go and play for the local female soccer team.
One day, Jules, a member of the female soccer team sees Jess and thinks she has a talent and could become a member in the team. She invites Jess to have a trial, and that is when the whole story unfolds.
On the first trial lesson, Jess plays well and the coach asks her to come back the next week.
As Jess was walking back home, she decided to play soccer with her male friends in the park and have a game. Things start to get out of hand and her mother walks past and sees Jess who is wearing her soccer uniform (T-Shirt and shorts) being carried in the air by one of her friends.
Every week, Jess goes back to train, but tells her that she got a summer job, but instead, she goes and trains.
When Jess finds out that Binky is going to get married, so she had to buy a pair of heels for the wedding to match her sari. The next day, she meets Jules and they go off to buy the pair of shoes, but Jess’s parents don’t know that she mainly went off to buy a pair of soccer boots. As Jess arrived home, her parents found out that she spent the money on a pair of soccer boots and non-heel black shoes. They were quite disappointed with Jess and didn’t trust her as much as the movie continued.
Ever since, Jess wasn’t allowed on the soccer team, she had to stay at home. Joe arrives at her house to persuade her parents in letting her play and the talent she has for soccer. Binky was covering up for Jess and saying she was staying at her cousin’s house.
The soccer team has to fly to Germany to play a large soccer match because an American scout was coming to see the team play. In the middle of the match, the opposition pulled Jess’s shirt and she falls down, so she got a free goal kick. Unfortunately, the goalkeeper catches the ball and the team loses. Although this happened, the team and Joe go out to celebrate. At one stage, Jess was feeling so sick from the dancing and drinking, she nearly vomits. Joe goes and comforts her. Soon, Jules comes out and sees them about to kiss and runs off. This leads to anger between Jules, Jess and Joe.
When Jess arrives home, Binky is there with their parents waiting for her.
A few days later, Jess visits Jules and they fight, again about Jess kissing Joe. Jess runs out of Jules’s house, ready to cry. Jules’s mother over heard them talking, and thought that Jess and Jules were lesbian!!
As the female soccer team have another important soccer match, Jess pretends to be sick while her parents and Binky go out. Yet again, Binky covers for Jess.
The anger between Jess and Jules affect the way they play the soccer match, and end up losing the first half. In the second half, they pass the soccer ball to each other and even up scoring a few goals. Then, in the middle of the match, the opponent pulls Jess’s shirt and the referee didn’t see it. Their team nearly lost the whole tournament.
Joe shouts at Jess for arguing with the referee, but Jess goes after him and explains what the opponent called her. Although Joe saw that the opponent pulled her shirt, he still thinks she was a bit rough. They hug each other, and Jess’s dad, who was watching the soccer match, goes and saw Jess hugging Joe. He didn’t talk to her ever since.
Binky was going to get married, to the man she loved and the day she got married was on the same day as the soccer match, when the American scout would see them play.
Jess gets her test results back and she could go to university and become a doctor or solicitor.
She told Joe everything that happened and he persuaded Jess’s dad, but he wouldn’t let Jess play soccer.
Does Jess go and play soccer or go to her sister’s wedding? What happens to the team?
You’ll have to watch the movie to find out!!

Examples of Film Techniques
* Got different views: park, soccer fields, stadium, Jess’s and Jules’s house and change room.
* Films at different angles, even if it is still in the same scene
* Lots of different props
* Lots of background music when playing soccer matches or the characters aren’t talking to each other.
* When in the wedding scenes, it always changes scenes so you can see the scene of the wedding and the soccer field.
* When Jess was hugging Joe, the camera showed them hugging at 360 degrees for a few seconds.
Characters: Jess is the main character and is obsessed with soccer and Beckham. (Too brief), Jules is the friend who introduces her to Joe and the female soccer team and they become great friends, Joe is the coach and takes care of all the girls in the team and treats them equally well, Binky is Jess’s older sister who doesn’t get an arranged marriage and always covers up for Jess when she goes to the football matches, Jess’s mum is extremely protective of Jess and Binky and forbids Jess to play soccer after the accidents that occur, Jess’s dad cares a lot for Jess and Binky, but usually agrees on their mother’s side, Jules’s father is happy about the obsession of soccer for Jules and enjoys playing with her and Jules’s mother is very concerned for Jules and her obsession with soccer, although she doesn’t approve of Jules playing, she still lets her anyway.
Opinion and rating of film:I thought the movie was an enjoyable film, with great dialogue and scenery. Although it was mainly about soccer, I think girls and boys of all ages will enjoy this entertaining film. For an overall rating, I would give it 9 out of 10.

Creative Account of my Speech

May 25th, 2006 by gracel250 in Recent English Weblogs · 2 Comments

As soon as I received the news that I had to do a speech for English, I started to get nervous.

Not many people know that I’m NOT one of the people who are confident of doing a speech in front of the class and my English teacher. Usually, when I’m around my friends I’m not nervous at all because I know them well and we are close group, but when it comes to speeches, I don’t like everybody’s eyes staring at me and expect me to do well and get a good mark.

When I started to think of a speech to talk about to my classmates, I wasn’t sure what to do. Since this speech was worth a lot of marks, I knew I had to do a speech which was interesting to my classmates and my teacher, so I chose to do “TV” and how it effects people’s day-to-day routine. This leads to children and adults watching more and more tv and less of communicating with their family and friends as well as becoming less active, especially if they eat while watching tv.

In my speech I included how it effects people, the dangers of watching too much tv, how we could solve this problem, a technology called “Eyetimer” which could help children and parents and limit the time children play or listen with electronics, why children and adults enjoy watching tv and a conclusion.

This speech did take a bit of time and thinking to do but in the end I completed it and was relieved. Although I had finished my speech, it was time for the hard part. Doing my speech in front of my class. For once, I wanted to get it over and done with, but I knew I would be to nervous on the day. Luckily, my English teacher asked my classmates to volunteer or pick some out of a box and you didn’t have to do it if you didn’t want to.

The next period we had English, I knew I had to do it because most of my friends had already done theirs. The time came for me to do my speech. As I was walking up the aisle, my heart was pumping faster than normal and my hands were starting to become sweater by the second. In some parts of my speech, I mumbled the words because of my nervous-ness and felt the tension of everyone’s eyes on me.

When it was all over, I was extremely relieved and proud of myself, because it was easier for others just to get up and do a speech in front of our class and teacher, but it was much harder for me.

Here is the speech I wrote:

Good Morning/Afternoon Mrs Raynor and fellow classmates. How many of you love watching TV? Me too!

Although we all love a good laugh and a bit of entertainment from time to time, kids are gradually getting obese as I speak.  Australia is already the 2nd largest country for obesity, let alone worrying about young kids being overweight. In the UK, the Washington University researched some interesting, yet dangerous facts. Young children suffer attention problems in their adolescent years due to watching too much TV as a child, become fearful of the world and are more aggressive to others. Men who watch more than 21 hours of television a week double their risk of diabetes and by the age of 18, children in the UK have witnessed an alarming 200,000 scenes of violence from TV! Four year olds who watched a daily average of 3.5 hours a day are likely 25 percent more likely to become a bully and children who watch 8 hours of TV per day are 200 percent more likely to become a bully!

So, how do we limit the times we watch TV, but still enjoy it at the same time? You could simply do that by following some “Golden Rules.”

*In the room where the television is, put plenty of non-screen entertainment things for kids to do instead of watching TV. For e.g. books, magazines, toys, puzzles, board games, etc.

*Don’t put the TV in your bedroom.

*Don’t watch TV while doing homework.

*Only watch TV after homework and chores are done.

*Have periods of time without watching TV.

*Limit TV time during the morning, but it is best to avoid.

*Do not watch TV before bedtime or after.

*Don’t watch television during meal times.

*Only watch TV for short lengths of time.

*Have your own TV schedule.

*Persuade kids to play sport outside.

Luckily, there has been a new technology that has been created for children and parents to use for limiting the time in watching TV, playing computer and video games, etc. “Eye Timer” is a device which sets the time limit for the amount of time to watch TV, play computer or video games, etc. for children.

This is how it works:

Parents set a Time Budget for each child.

(For example, one to two hours of entertainment

per day or 5 to 10 hours per week.)
Children sign on to Eye Timer when they want to watch TV, play video games, or use the computer.
Eye Timer then turns on the selected device via a small wireless transmitter.
When time’s up, Eye Timer turns off the device.

There are many more new devices to decrease the amount of TV children watch, computer game and video games, but by far, parents thought Eye Timer is the best one.

The recommended time for Children watching TV:

Kids Under 2: No television at all

Kids Older than 2: No more than 1-2 hours per day

Kids should not watch more than 27 hours of TV each week.

So, why do children love watching TV? Most children love TV because of the cartoons, drama, reality TV shows, quiz shows and mainly the TV shows made for kids. Sometimes, they watch it so they don’t have to do chores, homework or anything they don’t wish to do, or just relaxing from school.

Most people love watching TV because of gaining knowledge, learning about our society, taking in information about the media, knowing topics to talk to friends and family about, unwind down from work or school, and entertainment.

In conclusion, I think kids should have a set amount of time to watch TV, but should still enjoy it because everyone should have the enjoyment of entertainment once in awhile.

Although watching TV has many downsides, sometimes, it still have some good purposes. As much as possible, I think parents should encourage children to watch educational TV shows, but still allow children to watch their favourite shows occasionally.
